At AvantGarde, giving back isn’t just about charity—it’s about standing up for values that matter. Each year, we support organizations that align with our mission and reflect the lived experiences of our team.

One of the causes closest to our heart is expanding access to education for underserved communities—whether through our support of inner-city girls pursuing higher education, adult learners overcoming barriers through organizations like COABE, or students navigating prejudice on college campuses. These efforts are deeply personal for our Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Greg Portnoy.

In 1990, Greg emigrated from the former Soviet Union to escape rising antisemitism—a system where Jews were denied access to college, work opportunities, and basic protections. At the time, Jews in the USSR faced significant barriers to education and employment, and little to no recourse when confronted with abuse or discrimination. Emigration was restricted for decades, with only limited windows for Jewish families to leave. Greg’s story is one of courage, resilience, and the pursuit of opportunity—values that align closely with AG’s commitment to justice, human dignity, and equal access.

This year, in reflection of that commitment, we are proud to support the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) for their work combatting antisemitism here in the United States—especially on college campuses. We believe in the power of advocacy and education, and we’re honored to stand with ZOA in building safer, more inclusive communities.

Founded in 1897, ZOA is one of the oldest pro-Israel and Jewish advocacy organizations in the country. Their work today includes legal support, education, and direct engagement with students and administrators to address antisemitism in academic environments. In fact, a recent national report listed ZOA among a handful of organizations named by Jewish student activists as being particularly helpful in fighting antisemitism on campus.

“Supporting ZOA isn’t just about charity,” Greg shares. “It’s about standing in solidarity with a community that continues to face existential threats and ensuring they know they’re not alone.”
